Every Lift Has Three Phases

A back squat isn't one movement: it's three. The eccentric phase lowers the bar under control, the isometric phase holds the position momentarily at the bottom, and the concentric phase drives the bar back up. Most conventional strength programmes train all three phases at once, every session, using standard tempo. That's not wrong exactly, but it means a lifter who's genuinely weak in the eccentric phase, someone who can hold a heavy squat but loses control lowering into it, never gets targeted work on the specific quality that's actually limiting them. Triphasic training addresses this by dedicating entire training blocks to one phase at a time, in sequence, so each quality gets focused development rather than being trained indirectly as a side effect of standard lifting.

The Eccentric Block: Building Control Under Load

The eccentric block typically comes first in a triphasic sequence and uses slow, controlled lowering phases, often 3 to 5 seconds, under moderate to heavy load. The purpose is to build tissue tolerance and control at end ranges, which is also where a large proportion of non-contact injuries occur. This phase is deliberately uncomfortable; slow eccentrics accumulate fatigue quickly and shouldn't be paired with high volume elsewhere in the same session. Coaches new to triphasic blocks often underestimate how much this phase taxes recovery and programme too much accessory work alongside it.

The Isometric Block: Training the Sticking Point

Once eccentric control is established, the isometric block introduces pauses at the specific joint angle where the athlete is weakest: commonly the bottom of a squat or the mid-range of a press. Holding under tension at a sticking point builds force production capability specifically at that angle, which carries over into the concentric drive once the pause blocks end. This is where triphasic training earns its reputation for fixing 'stuck' lifts that plateau at a specific point in the range, because it's the only phase of the three that directly targets a single joint angle rather than the whole movement.

The Concentric Block: Expressing the Work That's Been Built

The final block shifts to faster, more explosive concentric efforts, lower relative load, higher intended bar speed, to convert the control and strength built in the previous two blocks into usable power. This is also typically where the programme peaks ahead of a competition period or testing window. Skipping straight to this phase without the eccentric and isometric groundwork tends to produce short-lived gains, because the athlete is expressing speed on top of a foundation that hasn't actually been reinforced.

Who Triphasic Training Suits (and Who It Doesn't)

This approach rewards athletes with a reasonable training age who've plateaued on conventional programming, and it's particularly well suited to team-sport athletes who need both control (to reduce injury risk in cutting and landing) and explosive output (to perform). It's a poor fit for complete beginners, who get more benefit from general strength development across all three phases simultaneously, and for anyone in-season with limited recovery capacity to absorb an eccentric block's fatigue cost. Applying triphasic blocks to a beginner is a common misstep: the specificity is wasted on someone who hasn't yet built the base qualities the blocks are meant to isolate.
